1 OF M · REGISTER

The register of BMW's limited-run M cars in the UK.

One record per car, found by its chassis number, for the 1M Coupé, the M3 CSL, the M2 CS and the M5 CS: the car's factory specification, its MOT and mileage history and its sales, every figure traced to the source that gave it and left blank where none did. The register exists so that what is known about these cars is kept, checked and published.

Four cars BMW built in the hundreds, not the thousands.

Each has its own register: every car the UK was allocated, found by its chassis number and followed from the factory record to its latest MOT.

BMW 1M

An M car assembled from other M cars: the engine came from the 335i, the axles from the M3, and a small team put them under the shortest body BMW had. It was never meant to be the connoisseur's choice, and it became one anyway — the last M car with a naturally rear-driven manual-only brief and no adaptive anything.

BMW M2 CS

The last and hardest version of the F87, built for six months and then stopped. Carbon roof, carbon bonnet, 450 hp, and a manual gearbox that four in ten buyers chose over the DCT. evo made it Car of the Year against a McLaren 765LT.

BMW M3 CSL

One model year, 1,383 cars, and a specification list that reads like homologation paperwork. BMW's benchmark was the Nordschleife: 7 minutes 50 seconds, against 8 minutes 20 for the standard M3, and four seconds inside the 996 GT3 of the day. The SMG-only gearbox, the tyres buyers had to sign for, the radio that had to be asked for — all of it follows from that number.

BMW M5 CS

The first special edition in the M5's history, and the heaviest car here by four hundred kilos — which it hides. 635 hp, four seats and no rear bench, carbon-ceramic brakes as standard, and yellow daytime running lights borrowed from BMW's endurance racers. evo made it Car of the Year, the second CS in a row to win.

A register can hold more than the official figure: cars imported since are on it too.

One record per car, from the factory to today.

A record is built from what can be checked, and a blank stays blank until it can be. Nothing on it is estimated.

  • Factory record. Production date and plant, paint and upholstery, and the factory option codes, each named and marked standard or optional for its model.
  • MOT and mileage. The car's test record, and where its mileage sits against the rest of its model.
  • Sales. Each time the car came up for sale: when, where, and the price where it was published.
  • Condition. What the official record says about the car today, in DVLA's own words first.
  • Photographs and a record sheet. The car's own pictures, and a sheet of the whole record to print or keep.

The sample is a real car with its registration and chassis number left out.

Across the range.

The register reads every car together, so a figure about one car is set against its whole model, not a guess about the market.

  • Mileage quartiles for each model, updated as MOT tests are read. Where a car sits is on its record.
  • Sales by year, and the prices paid where they were published.
  • Colour and option rarity: how many cars wore each paint and carried each option, from the factory records.

For collectors.

The register is kept for the people who own these cars and the people who want to. Two ways in are planned.

Every figure on a record is traced to the source that produced it, and a figure no source gives is left blank rather than estimated.
