What the register holds about people.

1 of M is a register of cars, not of people. It still touches personal information in a few places, and this page says where, why, and what you can ask of us. Last changed 6 October 2026.

Who is responsible

The register is run by 1 of M, a UK publisher of technical information about limited-run BMW M cars. For anything on this page, write to info@1ofm.co.uk.

What we hold, and where it comes from

  • About cars. Each record holds a car's registration number and chassis number, its MOT and mileage history, its factory specification, and its sales. A registration number identifies a car, and DVLA can link it to the car's keeper, so the law treats it as personal information and so do we. We do not hold the names or addresses of keepers. This comes from the DVSA's MOT history service, from DVLA, from licensed vehicle-data providers, and from published sale listings such as auction results and dealer adverts.
  • About sellers. The name a car was sold under and, for a business, its website. Where a seller is a private individual, we hold only the name shown on the public listing.
  • About people who sign in. An email address, and a record of what each person changed and when, so that every change to the register can be traced.
  • About people who write to us. What you send: your email address, what you say, and anything about your car you choose to share. If you register your interest in a subscription, we keep that to write to you when they open.

Why we hold it

The register exists so that what is known about a small number of collectable cars is kept, checked and published. Identifying each car needs its registration and chassis numbers, and that is our legitimate interest in holding them; nothing published shows a registration number or a full chassis number beside a person. Sign-in details are held to run the site. What you write to us is held with your agreement, to reply and to do what you asked.

What is published

Today the public pages show counts across the whole register, each model's story and press photographs, and one sample record with its registration and chassis number left out. If more of the register is published, registration numbers are withheld.

How long we keep it

A car's record is kept for good: a car is never deleted from the register, because the record is the point. Sign-in details are kept until the person is removed. What you write to us is kept for as long as it takes to do what you asked, and goes when you ask.

Who else sees it

Nobody buys it and nobody is given it. The register runs on hosted services for its servers, its email and its protection from automated traffic, and each sees only what it needs to do its job. When we look a car up, the registration or chassis number goes to the DVSA, DVLA or a licensed vehicle-data provider, and nothing about any person goes with it.

Cookies

One cookie, set when you sign in, so the site knows it is still you. The service that protects the site from automated traffic may set a cookie of its own to tell people from bots. There is no analytics and no tracking.

What you can ask

You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be removed, or object to our holding it. Write to info@1ofm.co.uk and we will answer within a month. If you are unhappy with the answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
